Men’s Health

Pelvic pain

There are many reasons that may contribute to men suffering from pelvic pain.  They can range from having tight and overworked pelvic floor musculature, to hernias, interstitial cystitis, to prostate related issues.  Some symptoms of pelvic dysfunction are: abdominal/pelvic pain, burning, itching in the groin/buttocks area, painful interourse or ejaculation, testicular pain, and pain with urination of defecation.  There is no need to suffer needlessly from having this pain, because pelvic floor PT’s are highly trained in finding the musculoskeletal contributing factors, and helping return you to your previous life.

Pudendal neuralgia

This is a musculoskeletal disorder that causes pain, burning, numbness, tingling in the pelvis or genitals.  It can occur from overactive pelvic floor musculature that compresses the pudendal nerve, hip or back pathologies, history of being a cyclist, or physical trauma.  It can range in severity but, in general, limits someone's ability to sit, exercise, or have sexual intercourse.  As well, it can inhibit someone’s ability to have pain free urination or bowel movements.  Pelvic floor PT’s have expertise in evaluating the pudendal nerve and figuring out the reasons why the nerve has become injured.  They work with manual and therapeutic skills to decrease possible compression, and improve the nerve’s ability to heal, and decrease pain.  Method PT is passionate about helping this population get their lives back, and stop suffering from pudendal neuralgia.

Urinary and fecal incontinence or urgency

Incontinence is an issue that affects men all across their lifespan.  It can happen as they age, and the pelvic floor muscles weaken; or it can be a result of surgeries for the bowels, bladder or prostate.  There is no need to be reliant on urinary pads/adult diapers, because these issues can be addressed with physical therapy.  We have a multitude of tools available to assist with strengthening the pelvic floor and core musculature to help you regain control of your life again.  Please reach out today to schedule an evaluation.

Prostatitis

This is a disease of the prostate, that may start from bacteria from urine making its way into the prostate.  This can lead to infection, pain, or an over activation of the immune system.  While this can sometimes get better on its own, it sometimes requires antibiotics.  As well, it can oftentimes be confused with, or lead to chronic pelvic pain.  This is where you should schedule with a pelvic floor specialist to assess and treat the corresonponding musculoskeletal issues.

Enlarged Prostate

As men age, their prostates continue to grow.  For some, this may lead to prostate cancer, and for many will lead to difficulty with urination.  The urethra has to travel through the prostate, which can compress and decrease ability of urine to leave the bladder.  This can lead to urinary retention or bladder urgency and frequency. Pelvic floor PT will help with bladder retraining and manual work to create more space around the bladder and prostate to allow for better emptying.  It can be highly effective and decrease needs to rely on medication or possible medical procedures.

Prostatectomy

This surgery is a partial or full removal of the prostate, and can be done in a variety of ways.  As well, some men will require some type of radiation procedure.  This can lead to damage of the pelvic floor musculature and the pelvic organs.  If this happens, then one may start to suffer from urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and/or pain.  It is highly encouraged that all men schedule physical therapy after their surgery to help with their recovery and prevent the above issues from occurring.  It is considered best practice to receive PT after orthopedic surgeries, and this should be no different.

Erectile dysfunction

This is a physical condition that limits a man’s ability to maintain an erection long enough for sexual intercourse.  Most people are surprised to learn that physical therapy has a very high success rate in treating this condition.  With specific pelvic floor strengthening techniques and lifestyle modifications, your quality of life can improve with out the need of medications.
